Mrs Tanja: Our news for you

The evening school has some great news for you!

Overall the evening school performance is good, all the 42 children are happy and studying hard. Recently 4 students moved to 2 and 1 rank from 4th rank in the school. 3 children who never passed all the subjects did so successfully.

A student, Rajesh, was ranked First in his school in Story writing competition out of 70 children. I feel this is a start and lot of big achievements has to happen in the future.

The community decided to "adopt" another 20 poor children in the evening school, but because of the resource and space constraint this decision has been put on hold. One community person has volunteered his space, but the evening school needs one more trainer. Now the focus is on the next step of the children education after they finish 10th and 12th standard. The community agreed on the following solutions:
-to provide skill training on tailoring, computer and typing , electrical wire man training
-to find people to help the best students with their higher education. The volunteers who visited the children from USA, already agreed to help in starting skill training on computer and typing.

Ms.A.Retnabai visited the evening school on 23/06/08 and spent one and half hours with the children sharing stories about her personal life and she came up in her life by her own by doing small jobs and studying. She is an orphan. She gave sweets and shakes as well story books and gifts to the children. She was also teaching the children about discipline & behavior and positive attitude.

A local carpenter has shown interest to make furniture for the evening school children without any charge if we could help him with the raw materials that is wood,etc. so we have decided to make this with him as he also involves in developing his community children through evening school. The evening school is planning to make 5 bench and 5 desk in the beginning.

We are very pleased to tell you more about our project to help underprivileged children in a small community in South India. HELP Trust started the Evening School in Koliyonkulam in the fall of 2007 and today we have '''42 students''' in the program. It was not easy to achieve this level of attendance! We met a lot of resistance from the guardians of the children. Most of the guardians were not interested in sending their children to school and instead wanted them to help with domestic work and to bring more income to the family. But after persevering we began to see results. Slowly almost half of the guardians became interested in '''educating their children'''. They showed their support by actively participating in the parents' meetings. Visits to people's houses showed that they were happy with what we are doing. Community involvement is critical to the success of our project. We are now starting to see this involvement increase and the positive impact it has on the project. The '''children love''' the activity-based training, games and life skills we offer at the school. We are trying to further develop our curriculum to expand on the possibilities available with this type of education. We measure our success by the new-found '''confidence and hope''' we see in the children faces. The children understand the importance of education and can see its lasting and positive impact through roll play and other experiential learning activities we offer.
